THE DEEDS HAVE LANDED

Providential/heart-attack timing!  It was touch and go for a while there, but the HEAVY DEEDS LP squeaked its way into the physical realm just in time to wing its way to Dublin with us on Friday morning.  It will be available only at these shows, though it should hit the bigger distros sometime before we get back, so be on the lookout if you are interested (the CD should also hit distros sometime during the tour).  If you make it out to a show please come and say hello!  Looking forward to meeting so many people who I have only conversed with through this damned digital-ether.  Good times are our goal, good vibes are our medium.  Free your mind and your ass will follow (the Kingdom of Heaven is within).  Dates are below.

Addendum, click here for: NEW MAGIC LANTERN INTERVIEW

3/23/09

5 bands in one van: the too live crew does 14 shows in 7 days and Alex (helming ROBEDOOR's double-barrel doomin' SK-1's) cites Sammy J.: "Hold on to your butts."  Full reptilian insights.  One thing we learned, that guy knows how to summon some mad decent breakfast burritos in ABQ, aka Poshtown.  But who are these people who unleash such formidable musical forces to wash over the southwest?  And how did they find so many FELA KUTI albums on cassette?  Some mysteries wait to be revealed, but there can be no doubt about the good people responsible: Britt and Manda crown the journey triumphant by putting together the dopest night of music in Austin.  They don't make people radder than those two.

And how do BARN OWL manage to once again be the best thing I've seen live since the last time I saw them?  Epic gents!  TH' LANTERN continued its glacial move towards total solidification, and shone forth some of its most focused beams yet.  New jams and slow jams unfurled under desert skies, dueling pizza joints, on a second story deck amidst the birds, and in the heart of hostile Nonsenseville U.S.A.  In any and all settings, blessings were whirring heavy in the air.  Let's be honest, most of this power emanates directly from Chip's flowing locks.  Regardless, it can't be over-emphasized what a gift it is to spend a week focusing and refining with these brothers.  Training our mystic sight on the solar side of things, and blowing two amps in the process.  It was the main event from this perspective, and it won't be soon forgotten.  Also got the opportunity to lay down some SUN ARAW sets, and helm the organ-accumulator for POCAHAUNTED: an unbelievable joy.  Thanks, Manda, dear friend.

More updates loom, everyone I know is hard at work on something.  A new LANTERN LP looms heavy in the distance, and HEAVY DEEDS, the new SUN ARAW full-length has taken a big step towards fruition.  Keep eyes and bananas peeled.

2/25/09

Good news!  THE PHYNX, the very first SUN ARAW full-length, has just been reissued on vinyl and it looks and sounds primo!  The original CD was not properly mastered, but James Plotkin took his time and worked incredibly graciously with me to really bring it up to speed.

To mark the occasion, it has been released with the option of adding a bonus c20 of entirely new music called LEAVES LIKE THESE to your order, some wild and woolly jams.  Both of these can be grasped by clicking HERE and scrolling down: Mama Matrix shall thrust them into your palm.

In other news: rarely do we get the opportunity to play shows that are so crammed and vibrating with loved ones!  This Sunday will be, basically, a family affair: with incredible friends creating beauty and boogie as far as the eye can see.  As a warm-up, shake-down, and shimmy for our epic and perhaps foolhardy 5-band caravan to SXSW and back, a selection of us will be performing Sunday evening at the ECHO CURIO.

Unfortunately MAGIC LANTERN cannot coalesce for this particular show, but seeing as Grant has gotten angry complaints from the neighborhood every time we've played there, perhaps that's for the best.  So watch TH' LANTERN disassemble into its disparate, whirring mechanisms:

1/28/09

Good evening, gentle people.  The night is fertile and heavy with wax!  After a good amount of honest labor, the PREDATOR VISION/SUN ARAW split has been physically manifested from the noosphere thanks to the resources, know-how, deep loving, and tender care of Britt and Manda.  Thanks to them, to Phil for some weighty pronouncements on trumpet, to Matt and crew, and to Willy G for mad inspo.  Keep it up, everybody, and I mean everybody!

Predator Vision "Real Aliens"/Sun Araw "Hey Mandala!"

NNF147—LP ($13)

Two loose electric crews grind the great ghost-pipe in the sky on this sweaty slab of black wax. East Coast triad Predator Vision hit all our pressure points last year with a pair of rank/dank self-titled tapes, both of which trailblazed a shaggy path through curtains of cavernous moss via slow-burn low-end/drums rumbling (Ben Daly and Etienne Duguay, respectively) and outer space shredding by big dog Matt Mondanile (aka Ducktails). Near-perfect new age psych rock but without the trappings of either genre-hole. This is PV’s vinyl debut, and their A side monster, “Real Aliens,” alternately levitates/bulldozes through four main movements: tripped, trashed, free, and feel-good. All zones worth wandering through! Share the Vision. On the flip is hometown hero Sun Araw/Cameron Stallones, whose fertile crescent of Long Beach drugged out mantric world soul psych shows no signs of drying up. If anything, “Hey Mandala!” might be the most far out, deep down, revved up magic 8-ball he’s yet to throw into the public’s eye/ear. Buoyed up by hairy low-lidded free trumpet courtesy of Phil French (of Magic Lantern/Super Minerals), the track explodes in a narcotic cyclone of digital drums, voices, and waves of wah, before slowly phoenix-ebbing into a sick floor-shaking rhythm machine. Funked up. Like nothing he’s done before, and all the better for it. Black vinyl LPs, mastered by Casio Mon, in glossy pro-printed jackets with island/jungle art designed by Stallones. Edition of 475.
