Peaking Lights

936 Remixed

SILK014–12" ($12)

One of 2011’s most esteemed LPs gets reimagined through the eyes/ears of 4 key SILK-ists (Ital, Xander Harris, Innergaze, Cuticle), transforming the duo’s impeccable kraut-dub classics into tranced-out electronic rhythm experiments. Each artist explores a different approach (baggy acid, Factory synth-pop, robot Chicago bass swagger, etc) but all are vivid and wholly independent creations. Quite proud of this collection; PL fans need to hear this. Dope bootleg import-style jackets designed by web wiz Spencer Longo.

Bobby Browser

Just Browsing

SILK017–12" ($9)

Vinyl debut by visionary San Fran gear guru Bobby Browser is an exquisite EP of body-rocking pleasure trips swirling with dizzy synth lines and 303 champagne bubbles. Cuts like “Smooth Cruise” and “No Appointments” (featuring epic ‘Smalltown Boy’-style grey sky soul vox by Group Rhoda’s Mara Barenbaum) really define his unique dancefloor style, loose and intuitive and west coast but still anthemic and elegantly architected. A follow up’s already in the works: Still Browsing.

SFV Acid

Grown

SILK016–12" ($9)

San Fernando Valley acid specialist Zane Reynolds is one of the LA basin’s best electronic groove merchants, fusing together a maze of lesser-jammed strains of 80s and 90s dancefloor micro-styles for something totally unique, wacked out, playful, and hypnotized. His previous EP on the PPM label was excellent but these might be his best trax to date, bouncy and faded and jazzy all at the same time. Features an inspired cover of the club classic “It’s You."

Maria Minerva

Sacred & Profane Love

SILK013–12"($12)

Tallinn’s finest closes out a powerhouse debut year with her most confident collection yet of alternate universe club/love anthems, channeled through the warped East Euro sieve of Maria’s magic eye. Deep, gold-sweat cuts like “A Love So Strong” and “Gloria” and “Another Time & Place” are some of the most enticingly housed-out dancefloor sphinxes in her oeuvre, and are surprisingly light on the classic bedroom haze production style, favoring instead a crisp, shimmering bath-house mode that’s as pure pleasure as the lyrical agenda. Exquisite weirdo beauty, and DJ gold for the bold heads in the booth. 5 tracks total, plus a killer Ital remix. Black vinyl 12 inches in epic metallic foil-stamped medieval illustration jackets (first SILK 12” not in a label disco sleeve).

Travel Expop Series #1: France

HITD007–LP

Cool French labels Hands In The Dark and Ruralfaune have teamed up to start a series called ‘Travel Expop’ where each LP focuses on four acts from a certain country, the first of which zeroes in on their home turf, showcasing about 10 min of music by reverb-seekers like Holy Strays, Cankun, Je Suis Le Petit Chevalier, and Voodoo Mount Sister. Comp LPs aren’t as common as they used to be, which is a shame, but this one’s great, pressed on white vinyl with artwork by Michael Sallit. Limited to 300 copies, we don’t have many, and this is cheaper than you can find it most other US distros.

MOAMOO#1–CS

Rare Japanese cassette-edition import of this great OOP album by Belgium’s best Hawaiian shirt-wearing new agist, Dolphins Into The Future. Originally released on LP on the KRAAK label, Moamoo came up with a new design for this limited tape edition (full color j-card, pro-dubbed and imprinted tapes, shrinkwrapped, etc) and it looks and sounds ideal. A dope follow-up to his NNF LP, this one is a little more pure in its pursuit of that tranquil aquatic ambient wash style. Don’t have many of this one.

The Away Team

Star Kinship

NOMOA019–CD ($9)

Mesmerizing CD full-length by this offshoot/side project of Italy’s amazing Polysick (forthcoming tape on 100% Silk) goes for more of a new age mind-trance vibe, like a Dolphins Into The Future jam laid over a shuffling deconstructed beat. Very headspace-y and distant, liquid keyboard tones and ocean flutes whispering across a night sea of soft looped percussion. Wish this was an LP, so good to get lost in. Comes in a cool digipak with awesome artwork too.

Malvoeaux

Broken Anthem

SILK015–12" ($9)

Unspeakably bangin’ filter-house masterworks by Bushwick dance savant Jason Letkiewicz (of Innergaze, Steve Summers, Rhythm Based Lovers, etc) under his Malvoeaux moniker. Ridiculously sick disco edits and groove guitar licks are overlapped, processed, and pumped up with superbass house heartbeats to create something lush and legendary. The A side cuts have a pure dancefloor agenda while the B tracks go for something a little more sweaty and low-lit. Another choice gold chain in this relentlessly creative producer’s analog pawn shop. Maybe the best SILK 12” so far?? Can’t stop won’t stop.

Octo Octa

Rough, Rugged, and Raw

SILK025–CS ($6)

Have a finite pile of leftover copies of this limited edition SILK tour tape by beloved Brooklyn tech-house head Octo Octa, the first cassette format title on the label to date. Roughly 35 minutes of unreleased cuts (mixtape-mixed into side-long flows), ranging from revved up “I’m Trying”-style fog machine anthems to muted beat experiments to blissed vocal sample melancholias and beyond. The complete absence of throwaway/filler tracks further cements his rep as a producer with a magic touch. Pro-dubbed tapes with textured art-paper J-cards. Another SILK 12” plus a collab EP with LA Vampires are in the works, so don’t miss this precious stepping stone.

Shadow Disco

SILK008–12"

Badass grime-streaked shadow disco gems colored with breathy FX vox and almost post-punky liquid basslines by this incredible Brooklyn duo. Flashes of synth and reverb tom tom clubbing rev this into a real 4AM headspace, lost in a fog of laser loft sweat, dawn’s en route, hooked into the mirrorball mindstate. A full-length on Minimal Wave is currently in production as well, so get into these dreamweavers now.

Let Me See You

SILK011–12"

Debut EP by this east coast bliss-house artisan rides cool skewed mid-BPM beats and tranced soul vocal samples into blue-lit crescendos of heavy, shivering feeling. Chilled piano melodies cycle and dissolve on yr face like silver mist, pulsing with melancholy hope and real nuance. The compositional qualities of these tracks totally cut through. A very different SILK single and a pearl worth diving for. A collab EP with LA Vampires is in the works too, FYI.

I Can Feel The Heat

SILK009–12"

Ripping, ruling disco overdrive courtesy of Mi Ami/Jonas Reinhardt rhythm king, Damon Palermo. “I Can Feel The Heat” freebases 25 years worth of low-lit pleasure boogie into a condensed seven minute shredfest of electric abandon. The flip, “Clubhouse,” is equally mesmerizing, groove-riding nuanced 90’s drum patterns under a glitter sky of synth-strings and blood-pumping orchestra hits. Beyond epic.
