The greater midwest is responsible for much of the States’ most feral musics and, for our tastes, Ashland, Kentucky’s Social Junk are champs in this sphere, boiling ominous loops, mangled sax, heavy riffs, unhinged drumming, and various vocal moods (pissed, lost, aggro, angelic) into a gripping mess of convulsive electric atmospheres. Concussion Summer finds Noah Anthony and Heather Young’s chemistry channeled into eight hybrid slabs of rumbling drums, hypnotic thrash, and creepy, pained noise exorcism. Their discography sprawls through every tendril of the American underground, but this work blasts as deep as any. Black vinyl LPs in jackets with artwork by Robert Beatty (Hair Police, Three Legged Race, etc). First 100 mail-order copies come with an SJ patch designed & screened by Ryan Garbes (Raccoo-oo-oon, Wet Hair).
